Introduction of HKUST Air Quality Research Supersite
Equipments Introduction
HKUST Air Quality Research Supersite Facility

Background

The supersite facility is located at the roof of the sea water pump house on the shorefront in the campus of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The facility faces Port Shelter and Sai Kung, which is a clean rural area with little residential and commercial development on the east coast of Sai Kung.

The HKUST Air Quality Research Supersite facility is partially supported by the Environment and Conservation Fund and the University Grants Council (through the Special Equipment Grant) of the HKSAR. The facility has a total floor area of 1232 m2. It includes a 10-m high automatic weather station, 9 plinths for outdoor samplers and facilities, and a weather-proof air-conditioned modular house of 72 m2 with 10 sample inlets for instrumentation.

This facility is now used for the first Hong Kong Air Quality Supersite Study, which focuses on real time characterization of ambient particulate matter. Gas and particle instruments are being installed to the site and measurements are expected to start in the spring of 2011. In addition, it is also being used for a number of air quality monitoring projects in collaboration with the
Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department (HKEPD).

Location of HKUST. HKUST is at the east coast of Hong Kong, facing Port Shelter and Sai Kung West Country Park. The South China Sea is farther away in the south and east. Digital map from Google.
