MPhil and PhD Programs in
Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM)

Program Details

Program Duration and Class Hour

  • Master of Philosophy (MPhil): Normally 2 years for full-time and 4 years for part-time study.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD): Normally 3 years if a relevant master's degree is earned prior to entering the PhD program or 4 years with a first degree for full-time; 8 years for part-time study.

 

Program Schedule

  • Full-time students should take a minimum of 9 credits and up to a maximum of 15 credits per semester.
  • Part-time students are normally expected to take 6 to a maximum of 8 credits (excluding MSc project) per semester.

The nominal program fee only covers a registered study period of 3 semesters for the GD program and a registered study period of 5 semesters for the MSc program. Students are required to pay HK$3,000 per credit for additional course(s) taken beyond the nominal program requirement and HK$1,000 per credit for auditing course(s).

Tuition Fees
The tuition fee for full-time MPhil /PhD students for the academic year 2013-2014 is HK$42,100* per annum.
* The tuition fee is subject to an annual review by the Hong Kong SAR Government.

HKUST Clear Water Bay Campus (Hong Kong).

 

Medium of instruction
All lectures and materials are in English.

 

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)


The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme is established by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) with aims to attract the best and brightest students from around the world to pursue doctoral studies in Hong Kong.

The Fellowship provides each awardee with a monthly stipend of HK$20,000 (~USD 2,500) and a conference travel allowance of HK$10,000 (~ USD1,300) per year for a maximum period of three years. Details of the Scheme are available at http://www.ust.hk/hkpfs .

 

Accommodation Arrangement

Graduation on Completion of Studies

When students have completed the degree requirements for an award, or are registered in courses that will complete the requirements for an award, they will be included in the list of potential graduates.
To be considered for graduation, an MPhil or PhD student must:

    • Complete the courses specified for the program;
    • Achieve a graduation grade average of at least 2.850 in the courses used to satisfy the program requirements;
    • Attain a pass in the thesis examination;
    • Complete the program within the specified time limit; and
    • Meet the residency requirements of the program.
